HowTo: Email a Death Certificate To A Doctor

July 29th, 2009 jim No comments

The process: Send the doctor the death certificate, he signs it at his leisure, the office calls you when it’s complete, send someone to pick it up.

Now take this with a grain of salt because I’ve had mixed luck in dealing with doctor’s offices accepting an email but if they’ll accept it, it can save you a lot of waiting time.  Some institutions routinely do it, such as Hospice of the Western Reserve.

Step One – Install PDF writer software. http://www.cutepdf.com/Products/CutePDF/writer.asp (free application)

What is that? First a PDF (portable document format) is a file that will print the same on any computer, as long as that computer has PDF reading software installed such as Adobe Acrobat Reader (most have it installed already.)  PDF writer software creates a “printer” on your machine and when you “print,” it then creates a file instead of sending it to a physical printer.  Then you can do whatever you like with that PDF file: print it to a physical printer, save it in a folder, email it to someone, etc.

Step Two -Log into EDRS, On the toolbar, click on Tools, then Preferences. Highlight “Death Certificate,” then under the printer dropdown, select the “PDF Writer” Printer.  Repeat the highlighting step for “Burial Permit” and “Burial Permit-No Cremation.”  You will only need to do this once.

Step Three – Print a death certificate (or burial permit), a “Save As” dialogue box will pop up, name the document and select the location like you would normally save a document.

Step Four – Create an email and address to the specified recipient, “attach” the document you created to the email.

Step Five – When sending someone to pick up the death certificate, always take a paper copy as a backup.  I’ve had certificates that have printed out improperly on the doctor’s printer or they used colored paper or a variety of other issues.

Note: This process can be used for creating a variety of PDF files, not just within EDRS.

TSA Extends Known Shipper Compliance Deadline to August 1

June 23rd, 2009 jim No comments

NFDA just received word that its efforts to urge the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to extend the compliance deadline for the “known shipper” regulations were successful.

According to an email from TSA Cargo General Manager Ed Kelley, who hosted a free NFDA Web seminar for funeral directors on May 19: “Because of the concerns expressed by the airlines and funeral industry, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) acting administrator has issued a 30-day extension to the July 1, 2009, requirement for human remains shipments to be accepted only from known shippers. The new deadline is August 1, 2009.”

The TSA emphasized in its message that airlines should continue to push through any application backlog they might be experiencing during the 30-day extension. TSA also stated: “It is equally important that funeral homes continue to work diligently to become known to the airlines.”

In response to feedback about the challenges NFDA-member funeral homes have experienced in becoming known shippers, NFDA was the only funeral service association that actively petitioned the TSA to extend the deadline.

Air Purifier Salesman

May 15th, 2009 jim No comments

This probably isn’t all that important, but since this is still in its testing phases I’ll add it.

There’s been a gentleman cold calling funeral homes in the Cleveland area and his pitch is that he was recently at a funeral and he notice a bit of an odor and therefore he can help you with his product he happens to sell.  We’ll ignore the fact that he couldn’t actually tell me whos funeral he was attending.  He has an Indian name and speaks with an Indian accent and the caller ID show a Sherwin Williams number.  I assume his employer wouldn’t be happy with him using company time to solicit business for his air purifiers.

Now I can’t actually speak to the quality of his product, but if his sales tactics are any indication then I would be highly suspect.
